Serving the Community...

There are many opportunities at SRM University for students to engage in service to the community - through healthcare camps, blood donation, advocacy campaigns or working with schools for the underprivileged.

Students are encouraged to take up community service through NSS or join any of the community service projects, to give back to the community.

National Social Service (NSS)

The NSS unit at SRM University has more than 1000 registered students. Prof L.R Ganapathi Subramaniam, School of Mechanical Engineering is the Programme Co-ordinator.

The NSS volunteers at SRM are involved in a wide spectrum of activities such as

  • Social service - the community around the campus
  • Cleaning the SRM university campus
  • Planting trees
  • Conducting health camps in rural areas
  • Organizing blood donation camps
  • Advocacy on community health
  • Creating AIDs awareness, helping NGOs to raise sponsorship and funds
  • Working with tsunami victims in rehabilitation etc.

The NSS unit also adopts government schools in Chengelpet district and works closely with the school authorities and students.

National Cadet Corps

The objective of NCC is to develop character, comradeship, ideals of service and capacity for leadership among youth in India.

The NCC unit at SRM University was started in 1996 for the SD boys and SW girls under the guidance of Associate NCC officer - Lt K. Shanmugam, Professor - School of Mechanical Engineering.

Around 20 parades are held every year - with the Republic day parade and the Independence day parade being particularly proud moments.

  • Regular parades are conducted on Saturdays and attendance is compulsory
  • Cadets are also encouraged to write the "B" and "C" certificate exams
  • Week long Camps are conducted and social service and raising funds for social organization such as for the blind and orphanages are also undertaken
  • Reaching out with Anti tobacco, Anti plastic advocacy campaigns are also a part of the NCC's activities
  • Last year, 1500 trees were planted in the campus and the smart cadets were also invited by the police to help with election duty
